UMES’ Big Harry

– The hawk was selected as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (then Maryland State College) mascot in 1948.

– Harry the Hawk, the persona of the UMES hawk, was born in the 1990s. Today’s mascot “Big Harry” was first introduced on campus in 2007 and is nine feet tall.

-In 2014, College Court Report named Harry the Hawk the number one college basketball mascot after he won their Mascot Mayhem Challenge.

-Learn more about mascots in the Smithsonian Institution exhibition “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America” and UMES Athletics specifically in “Untold Stories: Athletes of Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” Both exhibits are on view at the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis starting February 7, 2015.
